Seek the Support You Need

Written by my tiny tank on . Posted in Chronicles, Head Work, Support Groups

Getting the support you need is almost as important as the food you eat. It’s not always about the food. We focus so much on the food. What we eat. How much. How fast. How often. But how about why we ate ourselves obese in the first place. It wasn’t about the food.

You may not know this but each week I host a weight loss surgery support call.

It’s a very informal meeting. Anyone interested in weight loss surgery is welcome. You can find details here.

Tonight we had one of those calls. I love these calls. It’s all very simple. You need to talk with others who are experiencing the same things you are. You dial into the conference call. You gain insight. You share your experience. You leave recharged to keep your journey moving in the right direction.

What a gift.

You know you’re not alone in this journey. If you are struggling, seek the support you need. If you need help with food call your nutritionist. If you need help with activity visit your local gym or Curves. If you need to talk with those living the same weight loss surgery journey that you are than find yourself a support group.

A support group can do wonders for your journey. No one wants to do this alone.

You may have access to a local hospital group. You may have access to the Internet for Facebook or YouTube forums. Me I need to talk with friends. Friends who are living the same post op life I am.

Many of us ate ourselves obese because of emotional reasons. We need to address these in order to keep our weight off. You may choose to work with a professional and I recommend that. It has helped me at different stages in my journey.

But don’t underestimate a good chat with friends. Our group tonight left me recharged. I’m not alone!!

Join us next week. Get details here.

I really enjoy the phone calls you do, Tracy! Sorry I missed last night’s call…was a long day at work and I dozed off on the couch. Hahaha. Next week, hopefully!

I attend a support group through the surgery program I had my WLS through. It’s a really tight group and we have each other on speed dial for that “emergency” time. I need face to face support. My doc and dietician are also just a call or keyboard away.

I think it’s awesome you do this Tracy. I know many do not have support groups available to them.

Hi Trish. I don’t have a WLS support group near me and so I started the calls. It helps me so much just to talk with others each week!

Great post! I have not been to a support group meeting in months but feel as though I need to attend one to help get my mind back in the right place. I do however get tons of support from husband although he hasn’t had the surgery (doesn’t need it) and have made many friends through some online FB groups that support me. One of these days I will attend your call!

Support groups are so very important!!! As you know, I’m working toward a revision to RNY. I got hooked into a fabulous support group last fall and it has helped me immensely. Not just emotionally, but in ways that help normalize things. And the support group doesn’t stop on 1 Saturday a month. Some of us connect outside the group and support one another through other life challenges. I think the most awesome thing about support group is knowing I’m not alone in this journey and finding like minded people who are imperfect just like me. :D

That’s one of the reasons I love your blog Tracey… nice to see the realities of life, not just the glossed over ads for this journey which they make look like simply a destination.

Hi Cindy. You hit the nail on the head. Surrounding ourselves with like minded people is success in the making. When we are with those who understand we can open up and be honest. Yeah I’m a girl who knows this journey doesn’t have a finish line. It’s an on going adventure. Thanks for your comments. I truly appreciate you.
