Rocking The Band

Written by my tiny tank on . Posted in Chronicles, Exercise, Get Active, Staying Healthy

So I broke down. My boys have been rocking their Nike Fuel bands since the holidays. Well my husband prior to the holiday and my son compliments of Santa.  Me I got one this weekend.  Picked it up Friday.  But I didn’t fire it up until Saturday.  My hope is that it will help me understand at the end of the day “Did I MOVE enough?”

How do you know if you’ve moved enough in the day?    I think walking is the corner stone to health.  My mother was a walker and to this day at eight years old she still walks outside daily when she can.fuel band Rocking The Band

I have a current workout routine but above and beyond that I don’t really know how much I am moving during the day.  I have a desk job.  I hammer the keyboard for a living.  That sets me up for a lot of sitting.  So I really want to know how to maximize my steps each day especially the days I am working.  How can I keep the steps up?

The first way is to be AWARE of how many steps I actually have taken in the day.  Hence the Nike Fuel Band.  Even though I’ve only had for fours days it has been eye opening.  There has been a wide discrepancy across the four days.

The one thing I like about walking is that anyone can do it.  You don’t need special equipment and you don’t need a gym membership.  You can walk in your neighborhood or at the Mall.  You can walk alone with your iPod or with a friend and talk.

I’m going to study my walking pattern.  (I’m such a geek!) I’ll be able to see the volume of steps each day of the week.  And then I’m going to find ways to increase my steps on those low days.

I even found myself walking around the house today.  Why sit and talk on the phone?  When I can walk!  Ha!

I’m on a mission.

Maybe this new awareness will encourage me to get up from my desk and take a few laps around the house or office.

They say that you should get at least 10, 000 steps in a day.  hmmmmm

I”ll let you know how I measure up next week.

Do you know how much you move?

Have you used a pedometer before?

I have used a pedometer since 2-months post-op. I record my steps daily in my food journal! I like to be able to see my “lazy” days….then celebrate my other days, but continue to find ways to add steps! Like taking stairs instead of elevator between floors at work, walking to a further bus stop, walking the “long” way round from the boss’ office, etc…. You can do it!

Hi Dixie. Day 5 with my Fuel Band and it is very helpful knowing how many steps I have taken. Today was an office day for me. But I did get almost 7,000 steps. This week has been discovery for me. I realize I’ll have high days and low days but I’ve like to try and increase to I always have between 8,000 and 10,000 steps. 10,000 being my goal. I have some adjusting to make. I agree I need to find ways to move more. I can do this!!

I got a fit bit for Christmas and have really found it encourages me to get those steps in every day. If I haven’t got my 10,000 steps in at the end of my day, I walk on my treadmill. It has been very encouraging for me.

Hi Marlene. I got mine at the Apple store and used my corporate discount. Apples good they have discounts if you are a student or a teacher. etc. It’s worth asking. My company has a discount with them. So far I can tell you it is very comfortable. It doesn’t move on my wrist. I never even notice I have it on. I am amazed by that. I do take it off for the shower and at bed time. It is waterproof so I dont worry about it when I sweat or wash my hands. I’ll post more info on it after a while maybe an updated post.

I have a regular pedometer but want to get a fit bit this spring. I saw on their website that hey’re releasing a band one in spring so I’m holding out for one of those (looks like it’ll be slightly cheaper than the Nike one, and is going to come in a really pretty teal/aqua color…). Now that I’m in my goal range, I definitely want to stay here and want to be able to keep on top of how much I’m moving as well as my food (yes, a bit OCD, but if it works….).

I have had a fitbit for 10 months. I really like that it makes me aware of how much I am moving or NOT moving! I tend to take the stairs and park further away because I want those steps to count! I have been interested in the Nike Fuel but won’t replace my fitbit unless it breaks! Any little tools to help us move is worth it!!

I need to get something to get my rear in gear! I do walk but not nearly enough and sounds like a tool such as one of these will challenge me. Looking forward to another review Tracy as you use it more……it’s on my wish list for the future….thanks for sharing!

I purchased a FitBit One on eBay and got it super cheap! I love having additional tools (besides the scale) to track my progress!!

Hi Julie. It does help to see the numbers related to movement. After wearing mine for a week I can see a pattern. I seriously need to move more the days I am home.

HI Michelle. Yes I am loving my Fuel Band. It has really taught me about my movement patterns throughout the week. I have peek days. I need to learn how to “up” my non run days. I’m going to work on that. Both of my boys have the fuel band too. We are all learning that movement is key to being healthy!
