Pat yourself on the back. Ever since you had weight loss surgery your immune system has been stellar! You are never sick. And when you are, your body fights like a little champ. Note: I just referred to myself as “little.” Wow, now that’s a non-scale victory. I digress. Pat yourself on the back for eating good wholefoods to nourish your body. No chemicals or artificial ingredients. It does make a difference You know that. So tonight you are tired and feel run down. Cut yourself some slack.

You will get sick sometimes.

Drink lots of fluids and allow yourself a little moaning.

Let the boys wait on you.

You’ll be better tomorrow.

Do you ever get sick? How has weight loss surgery affected your immune system? I’d like to hear from you.

SInce my WLS in June 2010 I have rarely been sick. There were a few times I thought I was getting a cold, etc but it never took hold. Last fall I had a sinus thing or cold that wouldn’t go away, but it was honestly the first time I was truly “sick” in nearly 3 years

Thanks Maura for your comment. I too feel like I am rarely sick after weight loss surgery. So much that my husband gets really freaked out when I am sick. Last night he was on guard since I was not myself. I am happy to say that I am feeling much better!! Yah! I must of just been in need of sleep. Great news.

I have been amazed how few illnesses I have had vs. the multitude of viri i would deal with pre-WLS. Nice to be on the healthier side of life for a change. I use to joke about how I caught ever bug that went by, but no more!

Ba Bye to those BUGS!! Way to go Carmen. I feel the same way. Also my son is rarely sick. I do think the fact that we eat whole fresh foods and steer away from processed food is a big reason why we have good immune systems. Less chemical ins means less chemicals for your body to have to figure what to do with. Carmen thanks for your comment!!

Timely post! The guy in the office next to me has had severe bronchitis since mid-December. We interact daily. I am not sick!!! (good thing, because I still have fluid on the lungs from surgery that is slowly re-absorbing and I don’t need bronchitis.)
P.S. Do you think Egg Beaters have “chemicals” and should be used sparingly?
    Thanks

Hey Tracy! OMG we use to have a person who worked in our office and she was sick all the time ALWAYS hacking and coughing. I felt so badly for her. Her daughter was always sick too. I use to hurt just listening to her. So I looked up the Egg Beaters since I have never used them. found this What are the ingredients in EggBeaters? Is there a reason you lean towards eating EggBeaters and not real eggs? I couldn’t eat scrambled eggs after weight loss surgery. I think it was the texture. Now I couldn’t live without eggs, scrambled, hard boiled, frittata anything goes. I think some avoid eggs because of the fat or cholesterol. if you google egg vs egg beaters a lot of good info comes up. Me I eat the eggs and recently my already good cholesterol went down!! yes since I cut processed carbs! My doctor was hysterical.

I’m just past my first year so it may be early for me to tell whether I’ll get sick more/less post-op. One thing I’ve noticed is I haven’t had a migraine since before my RNY so I’m certainly thankful for that. I did have a head cold in December, and I learned two things from that experience: I don’t seem to shake things as quickly as I did pre-op (although it coincided with my year out check-up with the surgeon and she said that may be because I’m still in the losing phase and could go away as I get further out), but the more bothersome thing I learned is that tiny tummy’s DON’T handle post-nasal drip the way full-sized tummies do. Yuck. I was nauseous for WEEKS because of my stupid head cold. Yuck!

Hi Julia. Ahhhhhh yes head aches. Although I wasn’t a migraines sufferer pre op I did have head aches regularly. Now I never have them. It is a blessing. Thanks for your comment.

One of the reasons I went through with WLS was to improve my health because I was sick all the time. I caught everything and my asthma was miserable. I’ve only gotten sick 2 times in the 2 years I have been post op that required antibiotics or was the stomach bug. I get the common cold, but unlike anytime in my life I can fight it. I can do it over the counter and I don’t end up sick in the hospital or ER dying and feeling like death is at my door. It is one of the best side effects from surgery!
