Is Dairy Scary?
I had another blog planned for tonight but I had to ask this question and find out what you think. I am a whole food eater. I don’t diet but I do track my food and have awareness of how much I am eating. I steer away from dieting. I did that for so many years and we all know that story. I am always looking for ways to improve my nourishment.
My husband is a very healthy eater. He is way more strict in terms of what he eats and why. Me, I only eat foods that I like. He has been dairy free for some time now. I thought it would be difficult for him, but he was amazing. The whistler and I, we are dairy maids. We love our cheese! I love full fat greek yogurt and I add blackberries. It’s like dessert for me. And my half & half in my tea latte….
So recently I’ve been reading and watching health documentaries. I’ve been considering the need for diary. I’ve been contemplating whether dairy is something I should continue to keep in my diet.
I could not drink milk after weight loss surgery. It would send me into a dumping event. I can drink it now but not much of it and so it isn’t something I drink very often.
I have to tell you I CAN’T BELIEVE I AM CONSIDERING GIVING UP DAIRY!
So it was the documentary “the Perfect Human Diet” that really got me thinking. I watched it this weekend.
I need to go back and re-watch the segment on Dairy…. is Dairy Scary?
Do you eat dairy? If not why? Please leave me a comment and let me know your thoughts on this. Do you think Dairy is scary?? Eeeeek!

Hi Tracy. I have found that my sinuses are less congested and I have less acne when I’m dairy free. I can tolerate some whey protein isolates ( Designer Whey protein -Trader Joes).
I occasionally have blue cheese on a Cobb salad, usually on vacation. I think it would be a good experiment. If you tried being off dairy for 21-30 days, you’d know right away how you’d feel ( okay maybe in the first 72 hrs).
The lack of sinus congestion is huge for me. Not only during the day, but my quality of sleep is much , much better. That effects my whole awake time. I supplement with some calcium , drink home made bone broth , and eat leafy greens and a probiotic for my calcium and gut health.
I’ve been lactose intolerant since before I had my daughter. I had no idea it was effecting my sinuses, too.
Good luck. Let us know if you try dairy free.

Hi Karen. I have heard that sinus congestion can be due to a food allergy to dairy. I’m gong to try eliminating dairy. But since I’m frugal I news to use up the dairy I have Lol. I’ll keep you all posted when I start. Thanks for your comment!!!

I’veheard about dairy affected hayfever and sinuses too. I have been lactose intolerant since having my gastric sleeve ( 6 months out ) so have been forced to give up dairy. I was eating soy, but after reading up on this I’ve stopped so can’t even consume dairy replacements. The only thing I miss is greek yoghurt, I also enjoyed it as a healthy sweet food with fruit as it felt like a tasty treat that was actually ok to include in my diet.
I do feel a lot better since giving up dairy, and find that it’s much much harder to eat any junk food because it all contains lactose or dairy products.

I don’t think I could give up cheese or yogurt! I don’t really drink milky less it’s in something so that would be easy, but giving up all dairy? I couldn’t do it. I will check out that documentary though!

I am vegetarian, and ate primarily vegan for a number of years. That works well for my partner (who I suspect is lactose intolerant), but I find I rely on dairy products (like cottage cheese and yogurt) for protein, especially since I am only a month or so out from surgery and still on soft foods.
We do eat a lot of tofu and soy products, as well as all kinds of beans, so that may even out over time. Right now I am happy using dairy, although I have read/heard a lot of “milk is for baby cows” from the vegan community!

Hi Karen. Oh no cottage cheese. Yogurt. I’m not sure I can do it. I can give up milk. I know that. But cottage cheese, Greek yogurt and half-and-half in my tea are going to be hard to give up. I think I can give up cheese. Cheese seems more like a luxury to me. More to come on this venture for me. Thanks for commenting. I like your input.

I’ll have to check that documentary out, but I don’t think I could do it. I was lactose intolerant the first 2-3 months after my RNY and was absolutely miserable. I just don’t think I could give up my cheese & yogurt & half & half in my coffee. For protein drinks, I generally use unsweetened almond milk so I don’t generally drink a whole lot of milk, but I’m a slave to cheese/yogurt.

I hate straight milk, haven’t had it in 17 years, I just don’t care for it. It’s psychological I think. I will do cheese and yogurt though. For protein drinks I have used light soy milk but planning on trying unsweetened almond milk.

Hi Jessica. I’d like to try almond milk as well. I’m not a big soy user in fact I try not to eat soy. I’m not sure there’s any non-GMO soy left anymore. I’ll keep you posted if I try the almond milk with my smoothie or in my tea. Thank for commenting.

I’m torn about this too. I LOVE cheese and Greek yogurt. They are staples in my diet. After doing the detox I did for 10 days I realized that I am actually able to survive without it. Since then I have cut back but I don’t know that I will ever cut it out completely. I don’t have adverse reactions to it like I do with wheat.

Hi Andrea. Dairy doesn’t seem to affect me adversely either. I’m considering eliminating it because of the health reasons. I need a week or so and then I’m going to give it a try once all the dairy is out of my house. My husband won’t miss it because he doesn’t eat it. But my son I think might have a fit. We will see. Thanks for your comment.

I have a yogurt daily. I also like string cheese….both are good sources of protein. I use 1% milk lightly on protein cereal… But that is not often. Love cheese!!!
