Hiking Because I Can
There were days when the idea of going out in the cold was not even a consideration for me. And not because I’d be cold. Since when you’re obese you have a burner inside yourself that heats you constantly. The reason I wouldn’t go out was because I had no interest. And maybe some fear. Fear of falling. Today things are different.
We’ve been awaiting more snow so we can get our snow shoes out. But we only have a few inches and so we hike.
We’ve gone out each weekend and today was no different. The National Park where we hike is blanketed with trails and hills. Perfect for a good workout type hike.
The air was cold, the sun shining, and I couldn’t think of another way to spend this day but with my boys in the woods.
I’ll let the pictures tell the rest of my story.

I love winter hiking. I had a great snowshoe hike today with friends. It was the perfect day here with about 6″ of snow on the ground. Years ago I would never venture out of the house except to eat out or shop in the winter. Winter in the parks is great!

Hi Tom. I saw your photos of the hike/snow shoe trip. Loved the shot of the rows of trees!! We need more snow to snow shoe. But hiking has been great. Love the fresh air. Thanks for your comment!

I love to hike and actually never let 300+ pounds stop me. The main difference for me is that hikes (most often with my sister) no longer end in tears and feeling hopeless/worthless. Now I can keep up with her instead of trailing far behind and I don’t get out of breath as easily anymore (in part because I’m no longer fighting back sobs!).

Hi Julia. I think walking and hiking are under rated. I love them. Just bought my son a pair of hiking boats. Seems silly for an 8 yr old but we do so much. Also we plan to do some hiking in Arizona or Colorado and we need him to be ready. My hiker in training. Thanks for your comments I always love hearing from you.

Good for you Tracy! I know how you feel……I used to drive from one store to another in a strip mall and now I park once & walk from store to store…I used to talk about parking further in parking lots and now I actually do it….I find myself wanting to walk/move more and that is a new feeling I’m learning to embrace:) It’s getting hard due a painful heel spur on the left foot but I’ll perservere until I can’t……thanks for your daily bits of inspiration!

Darlene. Someone in my mytinytank support group mentioned how exercise was like breathing to her now. It so made sense to me now. We need to move. Our body needs it. Hope your foot heals. Can you have it repaired?

Hi Tracy – I’ll have to see a podiatrist regarding treatment but I’m hesitant only because it may require surgery. Many, many years ago, I had heel spur surgery on both feet and was laid up for quite awhile……that will interfere with my goals for this year – LOL – only time will tell but I know something will need to be done; just hoping later than sooner – thanks for asking:)
