Do you know the low blood sugar panic feeling?

It’s the end of the day. You’re in the car. In traffic. You feel grumpy. You have a bit of head ache. You start getting that panicky feeling. I’m hungry NOW. All of a sudden. You start to feel like you could growl like a lioness.

Today this was me. I have a two hour commute the days I’m in the office. I happened to be on the phone with my husband at the time of this attack. He noticed right away. He knows when I get grumpy it is usually low blood sugar. He noticed before I noticed. “Do you have a snack?” He asks. Of course not.

I’m in a bad situation. And I don’t want to pull over. He asks “you don’t have the shakes?”  I think he is getting nervous at this point. He’s not with me. And he knows me, I’m fine until I’m not fine.

I start to panic. Is there food in the car? Left over snacks from my son? Maybe a mint from a restaurant night?

Then I remembered I had a small sleeve of glucose tablets in my purse.

One thing I’ve learned as a weight loss surgery post op, never leave home without a snack just in case. Being long term post op I sometimes don’t. But one day I had been discussing my low blood sugar events with a weight loss surgery friend, Amanda. It was on one of My Tiny Tank support group conference calls. She suggested getting some of these glucose tablets to carry in my purse.

It’s been a while since that conversation. But today they saved me!

I took one green apple glucose tablet. It was like a sweet tart. It dissolved quickly and tasted good. I have to say in a few minutes that panicky feeling dissipated.

These tablets have a fast acting type of carbohydrate and it worked. It got me home. And once there I ate a protein rich meal. I didn’t devour something the minute I got in the door because I was in a panic. That’s what typically happens to me.

We need to think ahead. If you find that you have low blood sugar events sometime. Pick up some glucose tablets for your purse or car.  Below are the ones I used today.  Click on the picture for more details.  Be prepared!

I have beef jerkey and muscle milk light protein bars stashed in my car and also some in my purse… just in case. Glucose tablets always hindered me shaking the shakey feeling and often spiked my sugars too high… but I wonder now that my diabetes is gone if they’d work… :)

Hi Amanda. One tablet did it for me. I could actually feel it working. Strange. Thanks for your comment.

Hi Marlene. It was not smart of me to not have some nuts or something in my bag. It worked and I was happy about that. Thanks for your comment have a great day!

You know I meant to ask my dietitian about this yesterday and forgot but I used to have crashes prior to surgery.

Now the small amount of food I eat I would think I would experience a crash but I don’t. It is weird. Not complaining mind you but curious about it.

I do however keep a protein bar in my glove box just in case.

Hi Trish! My thoughts on this is you are absorbing less right now. But I’m not a medical professional it would be good to hear what your nut says. I really need to keep and leave some nuts in my glove box. But you know i have an 8 year old LOL. Thanks for commenting!!

I am nearly 3 years banded and often times I forget to bring a snack when I go out. It stinks- I get all shaky. I bought small almond packets to serve this purpose, but I never remember to bring them with me. FAIL

Hi Maura. Yes that too. Having a snack with you helps with low blood sugar. Nuts are good. Maybe keep a packet in your purse. Or glove compartment. Thanks for commenting.
