Chew Chew Chew
I recall when my son was very young, a toddler. I remember trying to slow him down when he was eating solid foods. He either wanted to move on to something else or was so hungry that he was gobbling down his food. We sue to say to him “chew, chew, chew.” It is something we could all do a bit better. Take our time and chew our foods. Eat slowly.
This video from a fellow weight loss surgery friend was “brilliant.” Very enlightening. It made me think about chewing and taking my time to enjoy my food. Nourish my body by starting the digestion process by chewing the food propoerly. Watch for your self and enjoy. It is quite comical too. I LOVE dogs.
How are your chewing habits? Are you early on a chew with fear? Are you years post op and not chewing so much any more?

One of my biggest problems. I don’t chew enough and block my band. Takes a lot of thought to eat at times

Hi Maura, I’ve heard that some people actually have a number of chews that they need to perform before swallowing. That seems like a good practice. I am post op RNY and if I have a “stuck” situation is usually because I was eating too fast and did not chew well enough! Ughhh! Chew Chew chew!!

Hey Maura thanks for your comment. You’re not alone I think people do have to really think about eating slowly. Someone once pointed out to me that they count the number of chews so they set a certain number of chews and stick to that for each mouthful. Something to think about I think I will.

Hi Marlene. I love dogs and if you watched the end of the video it was so amazing how the big dog sat and waited for the little dog. I too can’t get over why one was much bigger than the other. And they eat the same amount of food. Makes you think that we should all slow down. it might make a difference.

Chew…such a simple concept but since my surgery it is something that i really need to THINK about. Many times I catch myself eating too quickly. It is harder than you think to eat slowly. Our world moves so fast now! I can feel when I eat too fast. This is an ongoing issue. Thanks for the thoughts!!

I am constantly reminding my husband to slow down….no one is going to take his food away from him! My “tiny tank” reminds me rather quickly when I don’t chew and enjoy my food! It has been a struggle more at work than home, but doing much better! Thanks so much for the reminder!

Dixie. My husband comes from a family of four boys and he was the youngest. He says that if he didn’t eat fast he’d go hungry!! There was only so much and you had to take it while it lasted. Yikes!! He now likes to eat slowly and quietly. If he is really hungry I can see him eating fast. My tiny tank really slows me down!! I am done way before anyone else but it is because I eat about 1/3 of what my husband eats. Recently I”ve been trying to stop at work and eat my food slowly and enjoy it. I need to be mindful that it is time to eat. Not just wolf it down. I agree with you it is a struggle but something I want to improve. thanks for sharing your thoughts!

The timing of this is ironic because I just started noticing that I’m not eating as slowly as I used to. I get full real quick because of it and then get frustrated because I’m done already! I’ve got to work on this big time:)

Hi Darlene. I’ve heard also that we shouldn’t elongate our meals. That to maximize the use of our pouches we should chew well but not have our meals last any longer than 20 minutes. I realize in the very beginning we have to eat very slowly. It took me almost an hour to eat my protein amounts. But now post op a few years we need eat our portion and move on. It is all a balancing act and I do think everyone needs to determine what works for them. thanks for your comments.
